Siapin Horticulture: unique landscape design in California? Here at Gelson’s Market in Century City, we wanted to bring some green to the entrance which really seemed to be a concrete jungle. We went with some modern flower boxes and drought friendly succulents to really change things up. Siapin Horticulture is well known for landscape design and construction even in a downtown “concrete jungle” habitat. Chapman plaza located in Koreatown is a Los Angeles landmark. Dan and the Siapin Horticulture crew stepped up to the plate to facelift the historic property without taking the history out of this now bustling little plaza that is home to a dozen cool eateries including the Quarters Korean BBQ. Gutters and curbs transport flow fast to a stormwater drain without allowing for pollutant removal or infiltration using an inlet filter. Eliminating gutters and curbs can reduce runoff volumes and increase sheet flow. Maintaining sheet flow by removing gutters and curbs that direct runoff into bioretention basins and swales that are vegetated helps to prevent soil erosion by stormwater also helps retain hydraulic conditions (pre-development). A level distributor, which is a channel designed to convert concentrated discharge into a level stream and evenly distribute it on a slope, can also be included to prevent soil erosion.

The company was started in 1962 by Jack Siapin with the goal of providing high quality landscape construction and maintenance throughout Southern California. In 1978 Jack’s son Daniel joined the firm and became a partner. In 1997, Jack retired selling his stock to Daniel. Daniel’s son Gabe has joined the firm and manages the Maintenance and construction division.

In Hollywood, at Tioh Park and Play, they were in need of a new parking structure so we got right on that. Outside of the parking structure we installed new decomposed granite walkways and trees surrounding the structure. To give more of an “outdoorsy” vibe we also added boulders for seating. We also planted a vegetable garden for the students. This was all accomplished with us using sustainable landscaping.

Drainage systems are essential for quick removal of drains to prevent flooding of roads and surfaces such as car parks and sidewalks. Rainwater retention systems collect and hold collected water so that it can be gradually discharged into the soil. Excess water is pushed to the central system to reduce the impact when the water flow reaches its maximum. While detention systems protect against flooding, collecting and holding systems for water retention until it can be naturally absorbed into the ground and the underground water table can be cooled.
