Camphor Laurel was introduced to Australia in the early 1800’s as an ornamental shade tree and many large old specimens can still be seen in parks and reserves throughout Australia but particularly in the Eastern states. Another species of Camphor Laurel was introduced in the mid 1800’s and the hybrid cross that resulted is the rather straggly and thin, invasive tree that is rampant in Northern NSW and Queensland. Camphor Laurel invades habitats where land has been cleared, has a strong competitive advantage over native vegetation and is toxic to many native fauna. As a result it has been declared a noxious weed in many parts of NSW and Queensland by the departments of Primary Industry.

The best thing about buying handmade homeware woodworking homeware is that it is completely unique, and it simply cannot be replicated by mass-manufacture. It is near on impossible even for a skilled potter to replicate exactly the same item. The Little Pot Company gives a great example of one of the variables that effect the final outcome of homeware woodworking: “Glazes on handmade boards, especially ones fired in open flames usually have a much more varied character. The mug can be different colours on different sides depending on how the flame has travelled around it in the kiln.” Glazes are temperamental, kiln temperatures vary, clay isn’t always the same mix – the variables are endless.

As well as having a beautiful look and feel, there are a number of other health and environmental benefits to using Camphor Laurel boards when preparing and presenting food. A study that looked at the total numbers of micro-organisms found on the surface of cutting boards made from various materials showed that glass boards had over 3 times the number of micro-organisms compared to Camphor boards whilst plastic boards had over 4 times as many microbes on the cutting surface.

Stonewood Collections aims to provide you with the same products as shown on the website. However all our products are different in colour, texture and grain as the timber taken is grown at different climates with different amounts of water and sun. Due to the different timber or stone used, colour, texture, tone and grain this is NOT possible, please ensure you carefully read the product description before purchasing. Also, colours displayed on your computer monitor, mobile phone or other electronic device may vary due to your selected colour settings. The shape and size are also slightly different as all boards and products are uniquely selected and handcrafted, so no two pieces will ever look exactly the same, each piece is unique and one of a kind.
